Two South Kitsap schools recognized for growth and achievement

Port Orchard, Washington East Port Orchard Elementary and South Colby Elementary have been selected for recognition for growth and achievement, as well as closing the opportunity gaps among student groups. East Port Orchard Elementary is being recognized for closing gaps and demonstrating improvement among student groups identified for support. South Colby Elementary is being recognized for high achievement in English Language Arts and Math measures. The recognition comes from the State Board of Education (SBE), the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), and the Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee (EOGOAC). The recognition ceremony will be held at Evergreen State College on June 6.

This spring, in the first phase of the new state school recognition system, 216 schools are being recognized which have demonstrated exemplary performance or who have made significant progress closing opportunity and achievement gaps. The revised school improvement framework is designed to identify schools that have made gains in targeted areas and are on a path toward overall improvement in achievement and growth. Three pathways are used in the process:

  1. Closing gaps: recognizes previously identified schools with low performing student groups that showed substantial improvement.
  2. Growth: recognizes schools making the largest annual gains on the Washington School Improvement Framework measures and meeting the gap reduction requirement (narrowing the performance gap between highest performing student groups and lowest performing student groups).
  3. Achievement: recognizes the highest achieving schools on English Language Arts and math proficiency and the School Quality and Student Success.
